Just in: Up a Creek sets the "standard" for quality of serivce

(a.k.a. the "not quite as exhausting as last time" float)

After our recent run-in with gun-toting natives, the local law enforcement and 18 inches of mud, we were ready for a much more relaxing day on the river. Fortunately, that's just what the "standard run" provided.
Check out the photos.

Some Like it Hot!

Whew!!! It’s August in Kansas and Mother Nature is turning up the heat! Up a Creek has really been fortunate this year with our scheduled floats. We have seen a lot of beautiful skies and mild temperatures, excluding of course the lightning, sandstorm, thunderstorm that we lived through during the “Night on the Kaw”. But a float down the Kaw in the middle of the August heat is just asking for some sort of abuse.

Stuck 4-Wheel Drives, Guns and Police...we need a Therapist!

Check out the photos from the latest fine mess we got ourselves into on the Kaw..

Just a Standard Run

“Just a Standard Run?!?” you might ask yourself, “that doesn’t sound like Up a Creek to me." You know what, you're right! Nothing is very standard with Uncle Ron and The Puppy. The guys at Standard Tire in Perry know that too; well, at least they are about to find out. On August 4th, we will once again make our float from the Seward boat ramp in Topeka to the Rising Sun boat ramp in Lecompton. The last run on the 16th was quite a success with only one of our party succumbing to the power of the Kaw (aka too much Old Milwaukee’s Best -- we knew that stuff wasn’t good for ya)! Check out the pics in the photo album called 2007, “The Bald Eagle Run”.

This run is about 11 miles so there is a need to pack your provisions well. We are planning on leaving the Rising Sun boat ramp in Perry around 9:00 a.m. and caravaning to the Seward boat ramp. The entire float should last about 7 hours. The temperature for the day is supposed to be in the mid-90s and sunny, so bring some sun screen and hats. Pack food and drinks for the day. Drinking water is an essential! The river level is continuing to drop, so we will be finding more sandbars which could mean the possibility of pulling canoes to the deeper spots in the Kaw.

Space is limited as the Standard Tire folks already have 11 going. If you are interested joining, it will be fist come first serve, so let us know asap. If you have any questions, please contact us by email or by calling Uncle Ron at 597-5730 or The Puppy at 785-840-4204.

“If Ya have a Bad Time…It’s Your Own Fault”

A Little Therapy...Up a Creek Style!

Uncle Ron and The Puppy are all about good vibes and positive energy. We truly feel this comes from some principles that were set forth in the Up a Creek Constitution. Two important fundamentals are that we are about having FUN and that if you have a bad time it is truly your own fault. Being compassionate souls, we understand that sometimes folks have a hard time finding that special place and that there is a need for some “therapy”. That stated, the folks at Lawrence Therapy Works are in need of just that. After all of the therapy that they give, it only makes sense that they need some in return. You know, that kind of therapy that only a day on the Kaw can bring. Nature’s sun shining down on you and her cool waters underneath, add in a gift from the gods: “Coronas and limes”. Top it of with some canoes and kayaks to gently float away your problems and before you know it you have been therapized, Up a Creek style.

Space is limited on this run as we have 11 folks already in need of the special care that we are renowned for providing. If you plan on attending, it is first come, first serve. We are meeting at Uncle Ron’s in Perry between 12:30 and 1:00 on Saturday the 21st. We are putting in at Jay’s Spot, which is a 6 mile float back to Perry. Lots of fluids are important on this run … drinking water as well and the water, barley and hops kind. You’ll need some snacks for energy. Let’s not forget the sunscreen … we are starting out later in the day and the sun is forecasted to be out in force.

If you have any questions …you can contact us by e-mail or by phone: The Puppy at 785-840-4204 or Uncle Ron at 785-597-5730.

A Night on the Kaw!

The time has come to have our first over night camping trip on the Kaw. This is a kid friendly adventure. The float will be on July the 14th and it is weather dependent, considering what a wet summer it has been we will have to keep you posted if we need to cancel. There will be a canoe trip on the Delaware River and on to the Kaw. We plan on camping on a sand bar in-between the outlet of the Delaware and Lecompton Bridge. We will meet at Uncle Ron’s house at Main and Bridge in Perry around 1:00 Saturday afternoon 14th. We will load supplies, coolers and canoes on the trailer and head to our drop off location which is 2 blks. west of Uncle Ron’s house. Please plan on any supplies you will need to survive during the day, that night and the next morning.

Considering space for supplies, we are limited on canoes. We have 3 canoes open at this time, so if you are planning on attending let us know in advance to reserve a canoe. If you are bringing your own canoe we will help transport your canoes and supplies from Perry to the drop-in and get–out locations. We will attempt to have firewood for a campfire and cooking but please plan other means to cook food and staying warm. On Sunday morning we will plan on leaving a few hours after breakfast. We will plan on canoing back up the Delaware for the get out location but if the currant is to strong or we are too tired we will canoe down to the Rising Sun access point. So come along and enjoy a “Night on the Kaw”. If you would like to join us please contact us by email or by calling Uncle Ron at 597-5730 or The Puppy at 785-840-4204.

The "Bald Eagle" Run

Lecompton Kansas was founded in 1854 and platted on a bluff on the south bank of the Kansas River. It was originally called "Bald Eagle," but then later changed to Lecompton in honor of Samuel D. Lecompte, the chief justice of the territorial Supreme Court. In 1855, the town became the permanent and only official capital of the Kansas Territory. In Honor of Lecompton, Territorial Days, the 4th of July and just because we needed an interesting name for another name for a float, we invite you to another Up a Creek Guide Serivce canoeing adventure on July 7th.
