Not much Flirting but what a Float!

Posted by craig on Sun, 07/13/2008 - 8:59pm

The Floating Flirties must have an inside line with Mother Kaw, Mother Nature and Mother of What a Day to be on the River!!! 89 degrees...5 mph wind out of the NW...blue sky and sunshine! Whew! What a pleasure to be on the water!

The day was great...even the water temp was nice...For a group of girls that have never been in a canoe before, UAC was impressed. Half way through the float Joy, Elizabeth and Renee tried the kayaks for a spin and then it was out of the canoes and into the kayaks...I think that Renee just edged Joy out of mileage bragging rights...

All in all, it was just a great day on the river!

Enjoy the Pics.

The Floating Flirties

Elizabeth, a new UAC client, will be taking a group of friends down the Kaw on Sunday afternoon. Get-in will be at the Rising Sun boat ramp in Perry and we will be floating down to Riverfront Park in Lawrence.

Biology Lessons on the Kaw...

Posted by craig on Sun, 07/06/2008 - 7:24am

Up a Creek was contacted last week by some K.U. Biology graduate students for some kayak rentals. We invited them along on to the Kaw with us since the water levels had recenly begun to subside. Although the weather didn't want to cooperate with us we forged ahead regardless of the mud, rain and lightning but by mid afternoon we were glad that we did. The sun came out, we got a lesson in turtles lore, rocks and old bones.

Thanks to Brian, our lone accountant on the run we were even able to find a new species of T-Rex... Platarex. We will be waiting on Vince, Cori and Wes to publish the paper on the findings later this year. No $3000.00 charge to publish it here guys!

Enjoy the Pics...

UAC Demo at Clinton Lake

On Saturday, June 28th Up a Creek will be at the swim beach at Clinton Lake with part of our fleet of canoes and kayaks. Come join us for a demo and test-paddle one of our boats. We will have a couple of canoes on hand, along with several different models of kayaks. We plan to be at the lake from 11am - 2pm near the swim beach.

Training for Colorado

We leave for Colorado in less than two weeks and in order to squeeze in a couple more hours of training, today Craig and I hit the pond on my parents land in Perry. Got some good practice in for our rolls and enjoyed the afternoon with the kids as well. Next stop, Pueblo whitewater park.

(Special thanks to Andrew, who served as the official UAC photographer today. Nice shots!) Click on the image below for more from today.

Book Club Float

Up a Creek is providing its services to a local book club on Sunday, June 8. We have plenty of available canoes and kayaks for this day if anyone else wants to join us for a float between Perry and Lawrence. Currently, forecast calls for sunny skies and 94 degrees! My guess is that we end up spending time both in and out of the boats that day. Come along!

Jump In...The Water's fine!!!

Posted by craig on Sun, 05/18/2008 - 10:32am

After having to cancel on the K.U.'s Textile Club Float (sorry all, but the weather was not working with us) ...Up a Creek got out on to the Kaw this weekend... and no better way to spend an 80 degree partly cloudy day than on the river! The float was desginated as a "Kids Day on the Kaw" but also an excellent excuse for the grown ups to get in some sun and relaxation.

If you're wondering why in the heck are all those folks jumping and floating in the Kaw...all we have to say is "jump in...the water is fine"! Click here for more photos from this float.

There's gold in them sandbars...The Edible Kind!!!

Posted by craig on Sun, 04/27/2008 - 10:34pm

After canceling a float due to the threat of bad weather, I woke up Saturday to a beautiful sunny day. I wasn't about to let a little cancellation ruin a good day on the river so Shannon, Dave and I hit the Kaw anyway to hunt for mushrooms. And not only did we find those edible and elusive wonders but it turned out to be a fine day for a float on the Kaw...Enjoy the pics and we'll enjoy eating the mushrooms!

The Morel Run

Putting in at Jay's (one of our favorite private river access points), this run will cover the 6.5 miles to the Rising Sun boat ramp in Perry. Along the way, we plan a brief detour into an area which is known to be a good mushroom hunting ground. Currently the forecast is for mostly sunny skies and a high of 66. Water levels should be good with the rain forecast between now and then.

Let us know if you plan to come along!

They Came, They Floated, They Made Sand Angels????

Posted by craig on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 5:08am

On Saturday, April 5th the Perry High School Biology Club floated from Perry to Lawrence. Even though Mother Nature got carried away with a strong wind out of the south-west that made paddling a challenge, it was a day full of sunshine and sandbars and yes, even sand angels!
